Well, okay, I might’ve been wrong when I declared Sometimes Weekly “the essential 2024 newsletter.” As eagle-eyed readers may have noticed, Sometimes Weekly has returned to its traditional publishing cadence of occasional and sporadic.
Why the change, you ask? Because there’s an unimaginable amount of politically-charged content available these days, and I don’t want my work to devolve into preachy cookie-cutter hot takes pumped out like cheap hot cakes. Instead, I’d prefer my work to devolve into preachy artisanal treatises pumped out like big batches of barrel-aged bourbon. That’s right: I want my writing to be bitter, difficult to swallow, and, when binged, cause you to lose consciousness.
Plus, I started a new job and so I’ve been busy — hey, let's not forget, it is called Sometimes Weekly after all. Don't say I didn't warn you! I've always warned you!
With this inevitable return to form acknowledged, I want to underscore my continued commitment to Sometimes Weekly: I remain very excited about the future of Sometimes Weekly.
Sure, that sounds like something the Enron CEO said just before Enron burst into flames, but I really mean it! I've been working on some projects that I'm excited to share with you over the next few months, and certainly plan to continue publishing occasional barrel-aged entries on the present state of American politics (spoiler alert: bad).
In the craziness of today's world, creativity and community seem to be the essential tools for survival, and I strive to embed each within the work I produce for Sometimes Weekly. Through humor and storytelling, that has always been my primary goal.
On the topic of community, your support has meant a great deal to me. Given the changes outlined here, which is really a reversion toward the mean compared to my plans at the end of 2023, Paid Subscriptions have been paused and will resume on July 4th, 2024. If you’re a Paid Subscriber (thank you!) this gives you some time to decide whether you want to continue financially supporting Sometimes Weekly. Such support is additive, not necessary.
I created Sometimes Weekly in 2015 to share my best work with you, dear reader, and this is a step back in that direction. I remain excited, nervous, optimistic, and anxious about the future; that appears to be the perpetual state of my condition. For me, the act of writing helps combat the worst of these contradictory feelings and senses. In challenging times like these, which seem to require so much from us, when certain Self-Evident Truths must be defended, regardless of our individual stature or relative position to power, each of us would do well to pursue creative activities which help our soul grow.
Indeed, dear reader, let us pursue such passions with honest and purposeful folly.
With that, as always: stay tuned!
